Sometimes on a model railroad--especially a small layout--kits don't fit the way they were intended to be built. Kitbashing is the term used when you use parts of a kit in ways the manufacturer didn't have in mind. In this episode we’re going to talk about how I used the technique to create a unique building for layout. We’ll cover kitbashing: what it is, and how it can be useful. We’ll also talk about my thought process for this particular building, some discoveries I made along the way, then get into the process of cutting the walls and getting everything ready for paint and assembly.
There are lots of reasons to do this. For me, I needed a backdrop building to fill a good chunk of space, but also wanted a loading dock under the building. I didn't want to scratch build, so the solution was to modify a pre-existing kit.
If you've ever wanted to get into model trains, or build a small switching layout but didn't know where to start, this series is for you, because it's all about how to build a small layout! There's a lot to think about when building a train layout, especially in a tight space, and we'll cover everything you need to know on how to build a small layout. This is the seventh episode in the series on building a small HO scale layout.
