Mr. Wilde, Ceramics Teacher at Mountain Ridge High School in Utah, demonstrates how to construct a Ceramic Bowl using a Slab Drape Mold construction.

First, I'm going to demonstrate how to slab out a large piece of clay using my hands to pat the clay, using the lift and throw (gently) technique, and finally using a large rolling pin.

Once my clay is slabbed out in a rough oval-like shape, I'm going to texture the surface of the slab using the impressing technique. Specifically, I'm going to use an embroidered shirt where the stitching rises above the surface of the base fabric. But really, any object that would leave a mark if pressed into the clay would work.

Next, I'm going to set a football (though any kind of solid, round-ish object would work) inside of the bowl. The bowl should be smaller than the ball, and is just used to keep the bowl from rolling away.

Then, I'm going to lift up the impressed clay slab and DRAPE it over the football, hence the term DRAPE MOLD. It's called a mold because the clay "molds" itself around the object it's placed over. After inserting a few cups under the edges of the clay slab, I'm going to let the slab sit out overnight (approx. 15 hours) in order to let the clay stiffen to a leather-hard consistency.

I'll make four, small, coil feet that will act as a base for the Drape Mold, attach them, and carefully flip the mold over.

The result will be a clam shell shaped bowl.
