In this video I build a leather key fob that attaches to your belt by Fisher Workshops. It wasn't too bad of a project but I would not call it easy. I had problems lining up my stitching chisel so that the prongs would go through both layers of leather and lining up to each other. I ended up having to remake the whole thing. However, the second attempt was MUCH better and worth the effort. The project instruction and pattern cost $4.00 and I think it was worth it. The video and instructions for this project was informative and saved me time from having to draw out my own design which I probably couldn't do very well anyway. I used scrap leather and it was a good way to get some of the bigger pieces of scrap used up. Most of my scraps are too small for projects and the larger pieces of scraps are too small for real projects so it's nice not to have to toss out any leather at all. This project took a lot of time because I had to order the hardware. The hardware I have on hand didn't look right and so I would order stuff and get the wrong items so a lot of time went to waiting on shipping. I would suggest that if you make this key fob that you assemble the leather part first then TAKE THE FOB to the leather supply/hobby store and make sure you get the hardware that fits best. It would be much better to shop for hardware with leather in hand. As far as the leather goes, stick with veg tan. Also, don't go over 10 ounce thickness. This has two layers and I used 6 ounce leather for both layers and it didn't work well. I ended up using 6 ounce for the front layer and 4 ounce leather for the lining layer for a total of 10 ounces and it worked out much better. Plus, on my second try, instead of gluing both layers together and then chiseling stitching holes through both layers I did the stitching holes for each layer separately. Turned out so much better. It was definitely worth the extra time and effort. Also, make sure you have really good thread or know how to wax the thread you do have. Good thread made a world of difference.
I'm including links to the products and tools I used that I could find. I've had a lot of this stuff for years so maybe some of it is outdated.
Total time for me on this project was about 4 hours but if a person had all the material and didn't have to redo it, I think it's about an hour or two crafting session.
It was a fun project and turned out really good. I think I may even do this project again.
