I tried making Kumiko for the first time this week, this is the way I went about it and it worked well. It's not the only way and can be done exclusively with hand tools. I enjoyed it so much I wanted to share my experience and hopefully encourage you guys to have a go too. That wasn't my original intention, I was just trying it out to use in an upcoming project. It looks amazing as it comes together and is very enjoyable to make too.
I've been wanting to try it for a long time and glad I've finally gotten around to it. Following Mike Pekovich's stunning work on Instagram for the last couple of years (if you don't follow him you should) was the inspiration to trying out Kumiko.
I should've said that I used camphor laurel to make the strips, I believe traditionally soft wood is used. Although camphor laurel is a hardwood it does cut very nicely.
As always I'm happy to answer any questions.
