This is a recorded demonstration of a line and wash raccoon (well two raccoons), done for the Wednesday Art Group in San Diego. Pen and wash is an excellent way of capturing animals and their personalities. My aim is not to render every hair, but to capture their spirit and gestalt. I'm using finelines / micon pens and adding washes of loose colourful watercolour.
It is a Zoom recording, so the quality is not perfect, but you can see and hear everything. Many thanks to them for allowing me to post the video here. I haven't edited out questions etc, so if you grab a cup of tea it will be just like attending the demonstration - honest!
We chose a raccoon as the subject and in the first half I started with pen and then added watercolour washes, but in the second half I painted the same animal but started with the watercolour and then moved on to pen.
Take a look and see which you prefer.
