Today I’m wrapping up my Back to Basics mini-series by talking about how to avoid getting “muddy” colors in your paintings, and how to pick colors that make for a really beautiful pour!

To minimize mud, consider these factors:
-Quality of your paint: is it craft paint, or a higher quality tube paint?
-Opacity: is your paint transparent, semi-transparent, or opaque?
-Paint consistency: is your paint thin, medium, or thick?
-Your technique: how much are you “working” and moving the paint?
-The colors themselves: are they coming from opposite the color wheel, or not?
-How are you adding your colors to the pour?

When picking colors for a pour, I like to have:
-A main focus color
-One or more supporting colors
-A dark and light contrast color
-One or more metallic colors
-A “pop” color or two (but not tons)
There can be some overlap, for example, your dark or light colors could also count as your supporting colors, and a metallic could count as a pop color or a light contrast color. I think every pour should have at least 3-4 colors in it and ideally not more than about 12.
