Pruning it to knee-high, and creating space next to the Li made sense (even though people were upset that I cut it in half, lol). It looks like a year later it's growing with great vigor, and even fruiting this year! If you wonder how to plant a jujube tree, and if it'll work for you, I encourage you to try it. This fruit is like a secret gem in the orchard. Also called the chinese date, I started with the li jujube. Among all my fruit trees, the jujube fruit is one of our family's favorite to eat. Our backyard orchard has 2 jujubes planted, but these make GREAT front yard fruit trees because most people walking by won't know what they are. If you have experience growing fruit, you'll have a great start to how to grow jujube. When I added this lang jujube to my high density planting, something Dave Wilson Nursery calls "backyard orchard culture", I was adding a fruit to supplement my Li jujube. With this planting update just one year later, we see that the Jujube is a terrific drought resistant fruit, and adds some variety and stability to the backyard fruit garden. There are some differences between the Li jujube vs Lang jujube, with the Li and lang jujube serving complimentary purposes. Li is self fruitful, while Lang requires a pollinator like Li. To get the most back yard fruit, you would do best to have a couple jujubes that can benefit from Li jujube pollination. We have our tree planted in USDA zone 9, and these do well in the heat. Growing your own food, or even just getting garden ideas for small areas, our family wholeheartedly recommends planting a jujube or two.
