The massive roots on the grape vines that you purchase from a vineyard should convince almost everyone that planting bare root grapevines is the way to go! In this video I will show you how to plant bare root grape vines in a way that will encourage the growth of mycorrhizae fungi on the root system for enhanced growth and reduced stress during dry periods. Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to go out and buy mycorrhizae spores. They are already in your soil, and possibly already on the mulch you will be using!
If you have ever seen the tiny little pots or cardboard boxes that the grape vines sold at big-box stores look like, you will be amazed at the massive root system that comes on the vines sold by a proper vineyard. The roots on one of the vines I am planting in this video is over three feet long!
I show hot to plant your vines in a trench, as well as how-to properly position a bare root vine in the hole so as to not smother the basil area of the trunk -- something that happens quite a lot, and can damage or kill the vine.
