Lucky us: planting bulbs is easy! All it takes is a little planning and preparation:
Three things to think about:
First, pick your area. Most bulbs like full sun. Thankfully deciduous trees don’t have their leaves in the spring, so you'll have more full sun spots in which to plant.
Second, pick your bulbs. Look at the size and space needed. Allium get tall and should be in the back of the bed while Muscari are short and should be in the front.
Third, decide how to plant. I plant in drifts. It’s quicker and makes a larger impact. You can also plant each bulb individually.
To plant the bulbs:
To prepare the drift, dig a large trench. Make it as deep as the bulb package recommends, usually about 4-8 inches depending on the bulb.
Sprinkle with bone meal-high. Phosphorous is good for promoting blooms.
Set each bulb in with the pointed end pointing up. Cover with loose dirt and wait until spring!
If you have trouble with squirrels or rodents digging up your bulbs, you can lay chicken wire over the ground to prevent digging!
