Holding the tipper and playing stroke (6:42) 4. Keeping time and building speed (11:14) I’m Ruairi Glasheen, and I’m a percussionist, composer and filmmaker based in London. I’ve been playing #bodhran since I was 4 years old and I simply love this instrument! This is the first episode in a series of informal tutorials where I’ll share with you my approach to playing this instrument so please comment below any suggestions or requests you might have! Frame drums like the bodhrán have popped up in musical cultures all over the world for thousands of years though since the early nineteenth century the bodhrán has been an important part of Irish traditional music. Some people believe the bodhrán found its name from the Gaelic words for skin and tray combined. Others believe it has derived from the Irish word ‘bodhar’ which means deaf or dull. Lesson 1. Foundations Getting the technical foundations correct from the get-go is so important whilst learning how to play the bodhrán. In this tutorial we will explore all of the essentials for beginner bodhran students.
