In this video I run through how you can use a Hifi VHS machine as an analog mix down recorder. It’s a step by step tutorial so will hopefully be useful if you’re doing this for the first time.
Most HiFi VCRs have really good analog audio recording capabilities (kinda like a poor man’s reel to reel machine). With a bit of careful planning you could use a VCR to help produce a completely analog release where you track to an analog multitrack, mix to HiFi VHS, then copy/distribute on cassette or vinyl. Alternatively you might use the VCR as an analog processing stage in a digital recording, as an alternative to 'analog style' plugins in a DAW.
This video shows how to do this process with a PAL VCR.
If you’re using NTSC VHS, you may need to input a video signal to enable
audio recording too.
