How To: Replace the rear wheel bearings on a 1955, 1956, 1957 - 1964 Chevy. Trifive axel bearings
How to remove and rebuild axel bearing on a 55-64 chevy. This is on a 56 chevy, but it will be the same process on most GM cars from 55-64 and 56-62 Corvette. The only difference is the bearing will look a little different.
Parts Needed:
• differential carrier gasket Felpro 5188
Tools Needed:
• BFH I used a 5lb sledge
• 9/16 wrench
• Press
• Grinder/Death Wheel
• Big chisel
• Drum brake tool (optional)
Bearing for each year:
55-56: RW507
57: RW307
58-64: RW607

00:00 Remove drum and e-brake spreader bar
01:08 remove the four bolts behind the drum backing plate
01:26 pull axel out of differential
2:56 remove bearing retainer ring with a chisel
6:20 Remove bearing from axel
10:54 install bearing retainer and slide on bearing old ring
11:56 remove bolts from bearing retainer
12:20 press on new bearing to axel
13:38 remove old bearing retainer ring
14:34 install new bearing retainer ring
16:11 install gasket
16:21 install axel into housing. put oil on rubber o-ring
16:55 whack it with a hammer. Make sure bearing is seated in housing first
17:20 install 4 nuts on the backing plate
18:02 install e-brake spreader and spring
