Part 1 - Today we have every electricians challenge - Fault finding on a ring final circuit (also known as a Ring Main or Socket circuit) - but in this case it's not one fault but two, and in multiple places, only the neutral has continuity.

This is a 2-bed house that I recently completed an EICR on, which failed due to the lack of continuity on both the Line and CPC on the single ring final circuit.

As you'll see, this was a challenging fault to diagnose, but fun none the less.

As a reminder. A ring final (or Ring Main or Socket Circuit) is tested as follows:

1. Test Line-Line, Neutral-Neutral Continuity. These figures should match (eg. 0.2 ohms)
2. Calculate the expected CPC reading (For 2.5mm T&E with a 1.5mm CPC, multiply the reading from step 1 by 1.67 to get 0.33). Confirm this by testing CPC-CPC.
3. Figure of Eight Test. Connect the Line from one Leg to the Neutral of the other. Test each socket. In this case you should get 0.1 ohms (0.2+0.2 divided by 4). If you get increasing/decreasing values you have not connected the different legs together.
4. Finally connect the Line from one leg to the CPC of the other. Test at each socket. In this case you should get 0.13 ohms (0.2+0.33 divided by 4). If you get increasing/decreasing values you have not connected the different legs together.

Remember you are allowed +/- 0.05 ohms.
