Once you know how to shoot a dialogue scene, you can shoot almost any film. I failed because I didn't know which was the right shot. Do you?
00:00 Intro
Most aspiring filmmakers think they will figure out how to shoot a scene after they are on set and everything is ready. But if you want to become a professional filmmaker, you have to learn otherwise.
A dialogue scene is one of the most common scenes you will come across in any film (any film on humans that is). So learning to shoot a dialogue scene ensures that you can shoot almost any film.
Disclaimer: None of these are to be taken as rules, but only guidelines.
01:17 1. What is the Purpose of the Dialogue Scene
Every scene in your script should be serving a purpose: push the story forward.
01:42 1.1 Why Purpose
Without it you have no direction. Without a direction, how do you know which is right from wrong?
02:59 1.2 How to Identify a Purposeful Scene
04:06 2. Preparing to Shoot a Dialogue Scene
This is the fun part. All you have to do is just sit back, relax and do the following:
- Imagine
- Storyboard or Shot List
- Rehearse
04:28 2.1 Imagine
Observe how the written words inspire visuals in your head. Let your imagination run free. You don’t have to know how to shoot that crazy imagination of yours right now.
05:36 2.2 Storyboard
Take a blank piece of paper and roughly sketch out the images you saw in your head. Use stick figures. You don’t have to have any special artistic talent. Trust me. I don’t.
06:35 2.3 Why Storyboard or Shot List
07:43 2.3 Rehearse The Dialogues Scene with Actors
Let them learn the dialogues and work off of each other, while you guide them to bring the scene to life. This gives you new inspiration (angles, dialogues, frames). Let it all guide you to make something better.
09:09 3. How to Shoot a Dialogue Scene
09:33 3.1 Shooting the Dialogue Scene

2. Place the camera
3. Position actors
4. Roll camera and action
5. Check shot list. Repeat.
Focus on developing your craft.
