Vocal Warm Ups
1. Breath Management
- first regulate your air expulsion by using the elongated "f consonant" until you feel engagement in your diaphragm and the chest cavity wall. Aim for a consistent airflow that feels easy at the vocal folds (vocal chords). Never allow harsh expulsion of air to happen during singing, this causes a heavy vocal production that is not healthy nor conducive to great singing.
2. Sing in the Mask
Establish the right placement. Vocal pedagogy calls this the alignment of the buccal pharyngeal vocal tract, but that is way too long of a phrase and does nothing for us. Frank Sinatra called this singing in the mask. The Best way to attain this is to think about the look of amusement. We are aiming for a)high eyebrows,
b) tongue position that is high at the back
c) a clear zygamatic arch
d) lips that are slightly engagement like the beginning of the vowel [O]
3. Use the vowel combination of "Uh" starting in the bottom of your range and song scales comfortably up and down your range, but not too high, we want to master singing in the low and mide range first.
a) use the elongated "f consonant" and smoothing transition that airflow into the "Uh" vowel combination. Remember fogging up a mirror as a kid or the school bus window? That is the kind of breath management and airflow that we want.
4. The inward pelvic tilt, this is the 4rth point in the exercise that helps you stay ground as you sing. You want a slight bend in the knees while tilting your pelvic forward during phrases that require more energy, like high notes. We will tall about this in greater detail in later videos.
