Video Not Working? Fix It Now

Improve your sailing speed control by understanding the different angles where it is possible to control our speed, or not! When we learn to sail we spend so long trying to get the boat sailing efficiently that we don't spend much time on slowing down and stopping.

We will look at:
*Heaving to, & how it works
*Lying to
*Slowing the boat down whilst under control
*The 'No Go Zone', 'No Slow Zone' and the 'Speed Control Zone'

Heaving-to and Lying-to are different methods of stopping the boat as much as possible in a controlled manner - we'll always have some amount of sideways drift on the water. It's important to be able to accelerate the boat away again to really be in control of the boat.

Various sailing manoeuvres require us to slow the boat right down whilst under control, and this video covers the 'magic angles' where we are able to do this.

These videos are to help to support the background knowledge to understand what’s happening in a boat. You should learn to sail on a suitable course, led by qualified instructors with appropriate teaching ratios and safety cover. Don’t just buy a boat and try to learn to sail from online videos, as you could end up in a lot of trouble very quickly.
Find the governing body for sailing in your own country to locate a suitable reputable course. In the UK the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is the governing body, and also has recognised centres around the word.
