I spent a lot of time worrying about how to use reference when I started drawing! Here are my thoughts on how best to think about reference when you are drawing. Especially when you are learning to draw.
Having a poorly developed visual library (or not understanding what visual library even is) is one of the biggest problems we face early on. Make sure you understand that drawing something you don't know is almost impossible. But the solution is not always to find a photo of the right angle so you can copy/trace it... if you want to draw from your imagination the answer is to develop a good functional understanding of all the things you want to draw...
