Sample Artist Statement (General purpose):

Detour is a Denver-based creative that focuses on work where art and innovation meet. A born collaborator and “military brat,” Detour pulls from every conceivable experience that shapes his ideas and perspectives. This allows Detour to explore a multitude of mediums, ranging from traditional canvases and murals to photography and interactive technology. Threaded throughout much of his work, is the idea of using color to shift perspectives and evoke emotions. This has ushered Detour into a space where his work is distinctly unique and recognizable. With his ever-evolving approach to art, Detour’s focus is on expanding customary views of creativity and challenging fine-art paradigms and breaking rules.

Sample artist statement (For Murals):

My murals occupy the space at the intersection of contemporary art and community. they seek to highlight the heart and soul of their surroundings and provide a unique visual representation of many authentic community members - many of them have never had their likeness incorporated into any form of art. With each mural, there is a relationship-building opportunity that results in a product that is derived from the community. From interviews and neighborhood tours to photoshoots and local youth assistants, my murals look to be a part of the community from start to finish. The style that I execute uses splashes of bold and bright colors in an abstract way while still creating a recognizable form that feels familiar with the audience. The colors that are chosen, and the poses that are struck by the subject, are all derived from the surroundings and personality of the community. Simply put, the goal of my work, is to be an integral part of the community.

Sample Artist Statement (Interactive Body of Work):

I occupy the spaces at the intersection of traditional contemporary art and sound by using a multiplicity of materials and technology. Each interactive painting/installation is a unique experimentation of the relationship that tangible objects and color have with our interpretation of how they sound. With influences extracted from musical instrument design and the world abstraction, my work allows the opportunity for audiences to layer each piece with their own personal form of poetry. I employ the use of color and design to create, break, and manipulate associations that we attach to sound and shape. Thus, allowing the audience to investigate and unearth their autobiographical imprint of how they relate to color as an object, meaning and thing.

Each individual interaction factors into the physical product of my labor, often accompanied with a collaborating conductor physically creating a stream of sounds (whether it be music or cacophony of abstract noises). It is this multi-sensory experience that is embedded into the painted surface and manifests itself in real-time.
