北方的一座城市，结婚不久的新婚夫妇吴涛和陈凝住在太和小区的新房内，儿子体贴孝顺打算接母亲来家安度晚年，老人（习兰花）自然满心欢喜，但媳妇婚后的小日子还没过够，当然是反对意见，儿子拗不过媳妇只能以媳妇要考研为借口将此事拖下来。吴涛因母亲和媳妇的事心烦，便找好友赵志强大吐苦水，醉酒后的吴涛意外车祸死亡。陈凝和习兰花心将悲痛化为怨恨，矛头直指赵志强。赵志强将本不是自己的过错一肩扛起，还应允二人一定尽快找到肇事司机。陈凝在医院查出怀孕之后，对要不要这个孩子与婆婆发生争执，只剩两人的小家再起波澜。赵志强因日夜照顾好友的妻子和母亲而对陈凝产生感情，妻子林雨出轨后两人果断离婚，但林雨在离婚后还是会经常回来纠缠赵志强。母亲习兰花在来到陌生城市之后，凭借良好的人缘博得了小区秦老头和赵大礼的好感，并在院里有些弱智的傻安身上找到了失去儿子的精神慰藉。媳妇和婆婆的双重三角关系编织起了这个城市中的喜怒哀乐与悲欢离合，最终媳妇和婆婆都在人生的后半截找到了可以携手相伴的人。
In a northern city, newlyweds Wu Tao and Chen Ning live in a new house in Taihe Community. Their considerate and filial son plans to take his mother home to spend her old age. The old man (Xi Lanhua) is naturally happy, but his daughter-in-law has not had enough of her life after marriage, so she is of course opposed. After arriving in a strange city, mother Xi Lanhua won the favor of Qin Laotou and Zhao Dali in the community with her good interpersonal relationships, and found spiritual comfort for her lost son in Sha An, a mentally retarded person in the yard. The double triangle relationship between the daughter-in-law and the mother-in-law weaves the joys and sorrows of this city, and finally the daughter-in-law and the mother-in-law both find someone to accompany them in the second half of their lives.
