The Salvation (2014) is a western revenge story set on the American frontier in the 1870s. The story follows Danish immigrant and former soldier Jon as he builds a peaceful life in the harsh wilderness. However, his world is shattered when his wife and son are brutally murdered by outlaws.
Jon seeks revenge and kills the killers, only to discover that one of them is the brother of gang leader Delarue. This triggers a chain reaction of violence, as Delarue terrorizes the local town in retaliation, forcing Jon to confront not only the gangsters, but also the cowardice and corruption of the town. As the story unfolds, the themes of justice, morality and survival are explored in a lawless land.
Visually paying homage to classic Westerns and incorporating the sensibilities of Scandinavian noir, the film raises topics such as the cost of revenge and the burden of violence.
