HV Bushing of Transformer
A high-voltage (HV) bushing is a hollow insulator that allows high-voltage electrical power to pass through a transformer while keeping it safe from grounded objects. HV bushings are essential components of electrical transformers and perform several functions, including:

Insulation

HV bushings insulate high-voltage windings from the ground or low-voltage windings to prevent electrical shock and arc faults.

Conduction

HV bushings connect transformer windings to external electrical systems, such as switchgear or power lines.

Monitoring and maintenance

HV bushings often include equipment to monitor the transformer's condition and identify potential faults.

Protection and sealing

HV bushings protect the transformer's electrical components from contamination and damage.

HV bushings are typically made from porcelain, but other insulating materials can also be used. The design of the bushing depends on the voltage rating:

26 kV and below: Solid materials like porcelain, silicon, or resin composite can be used.

Greater than 26 kV: Layers of conductive material or foils interspersed with layers of paper are used to distribute voltage stresses. The most common type of bushing for voltages greater than 26 kV is the oil impregnated paper bushing.

HV bushings can be tested in the field or in a laboratory. Laboratory testing allows for more sophisticated equipment and tests at higher voltages, but it requires more outage time and is more expensive.
