A product of a General Electric-Qishuyan Locomotive Works joint venture, the China Railways HXN5/General Electric ES59ACi is the current mainline freight workhorse of Northeastern China. A total of 700 of these Chinese GEVOs were built starting from 2008, with the first two assembled at GE’s plant in Erie and the rest at Qishuyan.
These locomotives are equipped with GE’s GEVO-16 prime mover capable of delivering 6250hp. The locomotive's exterior is modified to fit the Chinese loading gauge and operation standards requirements. HXN5s are usually seen working alone but they are sometimes used in pairs or alongside other locomotives in sections with difficult terrain.
