Video Not Working? Fix It Now

Longer and mixed version of the two videos I shared with you last week from Hyundai Motorsport tests ahead of the 2025 WRC Rallye Monte-Carlo, also featuring some footage from their service park which I didn't include previously and a close-up of the new Hankook tyres that the WRC drivers will have to use for this first round, in both studded and non-studded winter Winter i*cept SR20 variants (for snow, icy or wet conditions) and the Ventus Z215 soft and super soft for dry tarmac stages.

In fact Hankook's presence in the World Rally Championship is one of the novelties of this 2025, becoming the sole tyre supplier for the WRC’s top categories (WRC, WRC2 and WRC3) for the first time replacing Pirelli. Another new feature of this season is the removal of the hybrid system from rally1 cars. The top rally class cars lighten by around 90 kilograms and they are powered by the sole 1.6-liter unit which was able to produce around 380hp, but this figure could be slightly lower due to a tighter air restrictor whose diameter changes from 36 mm to 35 mm to maintain an equivalent power-to-weight ratio between the 2024 and 2025 machines.

I managed to attend only the test days of the crews composed of Ott Tänak/Martin Järveoja and Adrien Fourmaux/Alexandre Coria but missed 'Day 1' during which Thierry Neuville with his co-driver Martijn Wydaeghe tested. For both Tänak and Fourmaux it was mainly a wet test session, although the latter had the opportunity to run on dry tires earlier in the morning of his day, despite the slightly damp route.

During these days, generally referred to as PET (Pre Event Tests), the teams close a stretch of road of variable length between 2 and 5 kms and the driver goes back and forth, from one end to the other, several times on that day in various stints (more or less long, depending on what they are testing during that stint). The section chosen for Adrien was was a beautiful uphill road in the middle of the Mediterranean scrub near the village of L'Épine with many rounded, slow corners connected by short straights. Instead that of Ott was much narrower and typical of the area bordering Italy (strangely with still purely autumnal colours even in January) which for a good half was off limits to public due to limited safe areas to position themselves in those wet conditions for the presence of steep slopes to the right and left. It was located near Saint-Clément-sur-Durance.

Enjoy watching the 2025-spec Hyundai i20 N Rally1 as it goes through various practice starts and listen to the turbo chirp under the influence of the anti lag system!
