বাঙালির ইতিহাসে প্রথম স্বাধীন সার্বভৌম সম্রাট হিসাবে আত্মপ্রকাশ করেছিলেন যিনি, তিনি রাজা শশাঙ্ক। খ্রিস্টীয় সপ্তম শতকে তিনিই প্রথম বাংলা ও বাঙালির প্রতি পুরো ভারতের সমীহ আদায় করেছিলেন। থানেশ্বর রাজ হর্ষবর্ধন আগ্নিস্নানের পণ করেও শশাঙ্ককে পরাজিত করতে পারেননি। শশাঙ্কের মৃত্যুর পর তাঁর পুত্র মানবকে হারিয়ে হর্ষবর্ধন গৌড়বঙ্গ দখল করেন। কিন্তু এই অপরাজেয় বীর শশাঙ্ককে আজ বাঙালি কি মনে রেখেছে? ইতিহাসের পাতায় ফলাও করে হর্ষবর্ধনের জয়গান হয়েছে, শশাঙ্কের মূল্যায়ন কি হয়েছে? মনে হয় না। তাই বঙ্গদেশের ইতিহাসের এই বিস্মৃতপ্রায় নায়ককে নিয়ে আজকের আলোচনায় উঠে এসেছে গৌড়সম্রাট সম্রাট শশাঙ্কের ইতিহাস।
The first sovereign emperor to emerge in the history of Bengal was King Shashanka. In the 7th century CE, he was the one who first commanded respect for Bengal and the Bengali people from the rest of India. Despite the pledge of a sacrificial ritual, the ruler of Thaneshwar, Harshavardhan, could not defeat Shashanka. After Shashanka's death, Harshavardhan managed to conquer Gauda-Banga by defeating Shashanka’s son, Manava. But has this indomitable hero, Shashanka, been remembered by the Bengali people today? History has glorified Harshavardhan’s victories, but has Shashanka been given his due recognition? It doesn’t seem so. Therefore, today’s discussion brings to light the forgotten hero of Bengal's history, Emperor Shashanka of Gauda.
