Today I spoke with Timmy Gibson, who grew up in a Pentecostal church, placed his faith in Jesus at a young age, and became a Pastor for 30 years before ultimately deconverting from Christianity.
We touched on many topics including:
• Being encouraged to "check his brain at the door," have blind faith, and to stop worrying about anything that didn't make sense, because god's ways were seen as far above ours.
• Feeling like his ministry and evangelism were directly and positively impacting people's eternal destinies.
• Starting to deconstruct as he read the book "Sapiens" and learned about evolution and Neanderthals.
• Moving from Fundamentalist Christianity to a more liberal perspective as he shifted his positions, especially regarding hell and homosexuality.
• Realizing the psychopathic nature of the Yahweh character in the Old Testament.
• Finding donations to his church drop exponentially as he publicly affirmed the LGBTQ community.
• Being told by other pastors that he needed to keep his changing perspectives to himself.
• Slowly concluding that people who subscribe to the Christian worldview are deluded.
• Realizing that we were both the victims and the perpetrators of the Christian belief system and therefore feeling compelled to try to undo some of the damage we had done during our time in Christian ministry.
• Experiencing much more peace after escaping Christianity.
