Gravesend, a town with a beautiful Gurdwara and an epic fort. Unfortunately Gravesend is not seen as positive at all by the general public. On my first visit here, I was overall shocked by how friendly everyone was and how cool the sights were. Yet it is known for homelessness, crime and deprivation.
Is Gravesend a "hidden gem"? A "tourist heaven"? or a deprived and crime ridden Kent town?
A month ago, a young man came to the Gurdwara of Gravesend, attacking the people there in a race fueled attack. Known as the "Gravesend Gurdwara Attack". I also visited during the UK migration riots, so tensions were high throughout.
Gravesend is among the top 5 most dangerous medium-sized towns in Kent. The overall crime rate in Gravesend in 2023 was 144 crimes per 1,000 people. This compares poorly to Kent's overall crime rate, coming in 59% higher than the Kent rate of 90 per 1,000 daytime population.
