During one rainy afternoon in Orlando, I visited the local Ham Radio Outlet, and tried the Yaesu FTdx10 and ICOM IC7300. I had seen many videos about the Yaesu radios having Digital Noise Reduction which seemed better than the more typical systems found on ICOM and other radios.
I fully expected to be blown away by the Yaesu, but ** IN THE CIRCUMSTANCES SEEN IN THIS VIDEO **, that wasn't the case. The particular weather conditions in Orlando that day really drove the Yaesu crazy. And this YouTube video doesn't do it justice. Audio was flat-out unreadable on the Yaesu. And while the waterfall display was impacted on the ICOM, the actual voice reception was not.
*** Now, it must be understood that this is a real "n of 1" experiment. It was this particular radio, on this particular day, at this particular location, with these particular weather conditions. Under the circumstances of a completely quiet environment with weak signals, I fully expect the Yaesu to be better, especially based on Sherwin testing. ***
Although not seen in this video, I did try the DNR but it simply had no effect and this strange repetitive-sounding interference just pushed right through.
Although I went in to Ham Radio Outlet fully intending to walk out with the Yaesu, I chose the ICOM instead.
