Judy Hilyard graduated from Nursing School in 1966 with a diploma in nursing and a license as an RN. The following year, she joined the pioneering staff of a new ICU. Intensive care nursing was a brand new specialty within Medicine and Nursing. Judy stayed in that specialty for 47 years, until she retired in 2014. She held positions as a bedside RN, a nurse manager, a director of Critical Care ( previously known as ICU), a critical care educator and a clinical nurse specialist in Critical Care. Along the way, She went back to school and received both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Nursing and a Masters in Public Administration.
Toward the end of her career, Judy took 2 different programs from the Sacred Art of Living Center in Bend, OR. She wanted to learn more about working with the dying within critical care in a way that was not being done - helping to support the dying process rather than just trying to stave off death.
From those programs, she heard about the Ancient Celtic process of working with the dying, call Anam Cara. - Celtic words meaning soul friend or soul companion. During one of those sessions, Judy learned about a practice used by some Anam Caras to assist the dying by escorting the person across the veil at the moment of death. They were called Anam Aira - carrer of the soul. Judy have been practicing those traditions since 2014, working with people to help them be ready for dying, escorting those who are afraid to die across the veil at their moment of death and connecting with loved ones who have died for those still alive and wanting to know how their loved ones who have died are doing.
