Ise was built in 1915 and completed in 1917 in Kobe. In 1928, she was rebuilt and the super-structure adopted the pagoda style. Ise was not significantly involved in the beginning of the Second World War. After the IJN's defeat at Midway 1942, she was converted into a Hybrid Aircraft Carrier Battleship designed to carry 50 dive-bomber aircraft. However, she can only carry a maximum of 22 aircraft. Unfortunately, lack of aircraft caused Ise to be out of action in 1943 and participated during the Battle of Leyte Gulf 1944. In 1945, fuel shortages forced Ise to be used by the IJN to protect the Kure naval base as an anti-aircraft float. On 24 July 1945, Ise received 2 bombs from an American air raid and finally on July 28 she was attacked again causing her to sink in shallow water.
