And before we get into anything else…I want to address this Chiefs situation. Because it is Tuesday morning, AND I AM STILL HEARING ABOUT PENALTIES. Yes, some borderline stuff went their way…but there was nothing wildly egregious. It’s just kind of a weird look to make this the story.
The refs didn’t fly through the air to throw touchdown passes…or leave Kelce unattended…or rack up 8 sacks…or let George Karlaftis run rampant. The Chiefs defense stepped up in every big moment on Saturday…and Mahomes made every play with the game on the line. I understand the frustration when calls don’t go your way, but I’m sorry – the Texans didn’t make the plays they needed to make to go win this game, and that’s what this came down to. 1-for-3 in the red zone…they didn’t get the ball inside the 10 yard line ONCE. It’s hard to win that way against anyone…let alone KC.
Maybe this is just the ultimate badge of honor…and how you know you’ve made it as a dynasty. We went through this with the Patriots too. The Tuck Rule, the complaining about the physical play from their DBs against the Colts...so much so that they started changing the rules and making illegal contact a point of emphasis. Whenever a team wins this much, frustration is going to mount, every single thing is going to be nitpicked, but give me a break. Go out there and beat their ass and be undeniable if you’re tired of them.
The Texans were not…and Mahomes now gets to play in AFC Championship #7 in his 7th season as a starter. It’s completely absurd. And I feel like we’re not fully appreciating the historic element to what the Chiefs are doing right now. I’m going to dig into that more tomorrow.
As for the Texans…I’d worry about this o-line a little more than the officiating.
52 sacks in the regular season, 11 in the playoffs…and it all clearly took a toll on CJ as this season wore on. Yes, they need to get that receiver room healthy too…but if this line isn’t better…it’s going to be hard for them to break through that Divisional Round wall. I love this team, I think they’re really close to being in that class with KC and Buffalo, and I’m hoping they’re able to get healthy, address some of these weaknesses, and make another run at it next year. And if you need this ref stuff to motivate you into the offseason – whatever works! But there’s gotta be accountability there too.
