DO THIS TO LEVEL UP YOUR TRUNK BASE - This video shows a bonsai technique that you can do to make your trunk base look older and more mature. It is a long process that can take a whole year, or in some cases 2 years for trees that root more slowly, like pines.

Ground layering allows you to choose a new trunk base and change the planting angle if needed. Doing a ground layer also has the advantage of thickening up the lower trunk base, giving the bonsai more taper in the trunk, which again gives the illusion of a much older tree.
