Zakarpattia Oblast ranks the lowest in western and central Ukraine for the transition of parishes from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. Since 2018, after the Tomos of autocephaly and the start of the full-scale war in 2022, only a little over a dozen parishes have moved from the UOC to the OCU.
As of the fall of 2024, there are about 600 UOC (MP) religious communities remaining in Zakarpattia. This is six times more than the approximately 100 parishes of the OCU.
At the same time, in 2022-2023, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) conducted numerous searches in UOC (MP) churches and monasteries in Zakarpattia, discovering various pro-Russian propaganda materials. Criminal cases have been opened against a number of clergy members.
hromadske journalist Maryana Pietsukh investigated how the law banning religious organizations with ties to the Russian Orthodox Church will be implemented in this region, given its deeply conservative nature. The UOC (MP) believers view the newly adopted law as "persecution of the church," and parishioners and clergy of the OCU are still referred to as "schismatics," and sometimes even as "godless" or "Satanists."
