Utah is home to some of the best Rockhounding areas, including this one where we find Gem quality Jasper, Agate, and Chalcedony. The quality of the Rock is so good and the surface so lustrous that we found it easier to use a headlamp and Rockhound at night. The nearby Veyo Volcano illustrates why the area is ideal for the formation of Agate and Jasper, as it had past volcanic activity followed by geothermal activity. Water, mixed with Silica and other minerals, made its way into the cavities and pockets of volcanic rock. Under heat and pressure from the earth, it hardened into Agate and Jasper. And in this case, exceptionally beautiful Agate and Jasper.
As to Jasper, we found Red, Yellow, Black, and even Purple Jasper. The color is derived from the Silica mixing with other minerals such as Iron, Sulfur, Manganese, Carbon, etc. The Jasper here is brilliant and full of a variety of color, often several colors in the same rock.
This location located not far from Veyo, Utah, is a first for us and we found it on our own. We did see one other vehicle that looked like they may have been rockhounding, so others may know of it as well.
