Born on August 7, 1937, Cardozo was commissioned into the 5th Gorkha Rifles (Frontier Force) in 1958. His military career is marked by bravery, resilience, and an indomitable spirit. Cardozo's most notable moment came during the 1971 Indo-Pak War. Serving as a young officer, he led his troops with distinction. However, during the Battle of Sylhet in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), he stepped on a landmine, which severely injured his leg. In a display of remarkable courage and determination, he amputated his own leg using a khukri (the traditional Gurkha knife) to prevent gangrene, as medical help was not immediately available. Despite his injury, he continued to inspire his troops and contributed significantly to the successful outcome of the battle. After his injury, Cardozo refused to be sidelined and proved his capability by passing all required physical tests, becoming the first disabled officer in the Indian Army to command a battalion and later a brigade. His story is one of unparalleled bravery, making him a legendary figure in Indian military history.
