Today, we are going to discuss in more detail about all the components and how they integrate with one another to achieve the desired result.
A quick recap, the purpose of the control panel is to be able to monitor and control various devices in whatever industrial application you are in.
Examples:
- Manufacturing facility
- Refinery
- Water Treatment Plant
- Power Distribution
Why is good power distribution so important and does it work?
Safety
The power coming into and out of a control panel is going to be one of the more potentially hazardous parts of the panel itself
Having power that is well organized and properly labeled can eliminate much of the risk associated with ICP’s.
What kind of power are you dealing with
- High voltage
- 3 Phase
- Solar
Understanding the needs of each type of power you may encounter and ensure that the hardware being used is design for that type of power application.
Anything higher than 120VAC, an external disconnect will be required for safety reasons, although they can be used in panels with 120VAC as well.
Fuses and Breakers
Make sure they are size properly to provide optimal protection.
Give examples
Outlet – 15, 20 amps. Network Switch – 2 amps. Etc.
Grounding Bus
Tie any DC- power to Ground
Tied directly to main ground coming into the panel
Make sure the enclosure and door are grounded as well, especially is door has electrical hardware mounted to it.
Power Supplies and UPS’s
Needed to convert power
UPS used to store power in the case of power failure
Power Fair Relay
Describe the importance of monitoring power
Mention that this function will only work if we have backup power in the event of a power failure.
AC and DC Power
Most panels have multiple types of power
Important to try to keep different types of power isolated from one another to avoid confusion
Wire Color,
Typically use Black, white and Green for AC power distribution
Blue and White and Blue Striped wire for DC power distribution
Transformers
If transformers are needed for voltage change, incorporated this into power distribution.
Use different color wire for different voltages in AC power.
Make sure that power to and from the transformer can be isolated with either circuit breakers or fuses
