Newton's first law states that an object at rest will tend to stay at rest unless acted upon an outside force. Additionally, an object in motion will tend to stay in motion unless also acted upon by an outside force. These ideas form the core foundation of physics in that they are the basis upon which we describe the motion of an object. Other phenomena are also reliant on motion such as thermal energy and wave mechanics, and are dependent on the idea of inertia and newton's laws of motion.
