Das knapp 30 qkm große Mönchgut im Südosten der Insel Rügen ist einer der landschaftlich schönsten Teile der deutschen Ostseeküste. Die Höhenrücken des Klein-Zicker, den Zickerschen Bergen und der Halbinsel Reddevitz ragen weit in den Greifswalder Bodden und gliedern die Landschaft mit den dazwischenliegenden Buchten "Having", der Hagenschen Wiek, dem Zicker See und dem "Kaming" ausserordentlich reichhaltig und schaffen vielfältige Naturräume. Die extensiv mit einer Heidschnuckenherde beweideten Trockenrasen der mit dem Bakenberg 66m hohen Zickerschen Berge bieten vielen wärmeliebenden Blütenpflanzen und Insekten einen reichen Lebensraum. Steilküsten, wie die am "Nonnenloch", stille, schilfgesäumte Ufer und lange, feinsandige Strände, wie der große Strand zwischen dem Fischerort Thiessow und Lobbe schaffen ein abwechslungsreiches Bild der 53 km langen Küstenlinie. Das Land gehörte im Mittelalter dem Kloster Eldena bei Greifswald, woher der Name Mönchgut stammt. Die Grenze verlief im Mönchsgraben am Seebad Baabe. Zahlreiche Reetgedeckte Häuser wie das Pfarrwitwenhaus in Groß-Zicker und das Rookhus im Seebad Göhren zeugen von vergangener Zeit.
The almost 30 square kilometre Mönchgut in the south-east of the island of Rügen is one of the most scenic parts of the German Baltic Sea coast. The ridges of Klein-Zicker, the Zicker Hills and the Reddevitz peninsula protrude far into the Greifswald Bodden and structure the landscape with the intervening bays "Having", the Hagenschen Wiek, the Zicker Lake and the "Kaming" in an extraordinarily rich and varied natural environment. The dry grasslands of the Zicker Hills, which are grazed extensively by a herd of heathland sheep and include the 66-metre-high Bakenberg, provide a rich habitat for many thermophilic flowering plants and insects. Steep cliffs, such as those at the "Nonnenloch", quiet, reed-fringed shores and long, fine sandy beaches, such as the large beach between the fishing village of Thiessow and Lobbe, create a varied picture of the 53 km long coastline. In the Middle Ages, the land belonged to the Eldena monastery near Greifswald, which is where the name Mönchgut comes from. The border ran along the Mönchsgraben at the seaside resort of Baabe. Numerous thatched houses such as the Pfarrwitwenhaus in Groß-Zicker and the Rookhus in the seaside resort of Göhren bear witness to times gone by.
