But a few streets away stands her real family home – 37 Merwedeplein. In 2004, the house was bought by the Anne Frank foundation. “It was inhabited by squatters and full of junk”, recalls the architect. Their first task was restoring the house to the 1930s. Using descriptions found in Anne’s letter, restorers painstakingly recreated Anne’s furniture. Then a receipt was donated showing Otto Frank kept up the rent for a year after they went into hiding.
