In 1981 in Brixton, South London, a series of clashes known as the Brixton uprising erupted. Amid high racial tensions, consistent stop-and-search tactics from white police on the black youth of the area, and the tragic unsolved deaths of 13 black youths in a fire at a party, tensions spilled over. The legacy of the unrest is unforgettable but unfortunate. Home to a large Jamaican community due to the windrush migration of the late 1940’s onwards, Brixton is a place like no other! Once a crime-riddled and troubled neighborhood, Brixton has undergone some redevelopment, but is it still dangerous to walk around with a camera in the estates? Some locals say it’s true Jamaican heart has been dispersed but we’ll see about that! Welcome to Brixton, London’s Infamous Jamaican Hood!
