Since I going to meet my friends in the Philippines (supposedly some hospital visits happened here, we will get to that) I decided to roam around the Slum area of Tondo Manila. I met some people in the street who were willing to take me to Baseco, a vibrant community in Tondo, Manila.
You'd be surprises, this area might be one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city, but what it lacks in material wealth, it makes up for in warmth and resilience and dare I say, Happiness? Why?
That's up to you to decide!
In this video, I start by seeking permission from the city Barangay to explore the area, a gesture of respect. I share a friendly game of pool with locals who have superpowers, visit Susana’s humble yet welcoming home, and taste street-side ice cream that did not taste like anything but sugar, but I was happy if I didn't get a bad stomach🍦
I also try my hand at a childhood favorite: a slingshot! It was both nostalgic and humbling to see how simple games bring joy here. I hope they don't shoot each other, these kids have supreme aim.
My Takeaway:
Baseco taught me that happiness isn’t about what you have—it’s about how you live. The people here welcomed me with open arms and reminded me that even in the toughest circumstances, joy, community, and connection can shine through, but I know that below the surface, there is suffering and violence as well.
