In this video, we'll explore the little-known community of Jewish people on the Island of Djerba in Tunisia, a North African Muslim-majority country (99%). The Jewish community in Tunisia has existed for roughly 2,000 years, and it may well be one of the only places in the Arab world today where we can see Jews and Muslims coexisting peacefully (for the most part).
Join me for a fascinating journey inside their neighborhood, where we'll try some of their Tunisian-Jewish fusion cuisine and ask them what it's like living as Jews amongst Muslims in 2024.
We'll also get to visit the ancient El Ghriba synagogue, a stunning 2,500 year-old structure that Jewish people from around the world make an annual pilgrimage to see.
It wasn't planned, but we happened to visit the community the day before Yom Kippur, the holiest holiday for them, so we got invited to witness their celebrations in the street as well!
I found the story of the Tunisian Jews to be inspiring. I hope you enjoy it!
