This is the Bell 505 Jet Ranger X, the new five-seat short light single that fills the void in the Bell product line left when production of the ubiquitous Bell 206B JetRanger, one of the most iconic and successful helicopters ever built, ceased in 2010. Its successor features an all new five-seat cabin, Garmin’s impressive G1000H avionics suite, and a 504-shaft-horsepower Arrius 2R turbine: this is not your father’s JetRanger!
By the early 21st century, the 206B, while still robust, was increasingly viewed as dated. New competitors had emerged with more modern designs and technologies, and the market was demanding a light helicopter with advanced avionics, improved safety features, and better performance metrics. Recognizing the need to build a true successor, Bell announced plans for a new light single-engine helicopter.
During its development, the company made a concerted effort to incorporate customer feedback, leading to design features like expansive glass for better visibility, and an easily reconfigurable cabin.
The base purchase price for a new Bell 505 is $2 million before options, and the charter price is estimated at $1,200 to $1,800 per hour. Naturally, prices will vary depending on availability, fuel prices, ground fees, and more. While the annual fixed cost is roughly $100,000 to $150,000, the average hourly operating cost is estimated at $600 to $900.
