Shugendo is faith to revere nature. Mt. Hiko (Hikosan), rising 1,199m above sea level in the southern part of Fukuoka prefecture of Kyushu, Japan, is one of Japan’s three major mountains for ascetic practice (shugen), along with Mt. Haguro (Hagurosan) in Yamagata prefecture and the mountains of Ōmine (Ōminesan) in Nara prefecture. Shugendō consists of a combination of various religious and cultural practices and ideas, including nature worship, mountain cults, folk belief, Shinto, Buddhism, Daoism, Five Elements thought, astronomy, and pharmacology.(MEXT/JSPS KAKENHI Grant Number JP 16K02314, Associate Prof.Tomotari of Kyushu University ) 修験道は自然を畏敬する信仰である。福岡県にある標高1199mの英彦山(ひこさん)は、羽黒山、熊野大峰山とともに日本三大修験山のひとつである。修験道とは、山岳信仰、神道、仏教、道教、五行思想、天文学、薬学などを習合している。(九州大学准教授・知足美加子*JSPS 科研費 16K02314 の助成)
