Discovering Coolalingo Waterfall…
Wicklow is often referred to as “The Garden of Ireland,” and is known for its rolling hills, dense forests, and breathtaking landscapes. Hidden away within this county is the Coolalingo Waterfall, a hidden gem that remains relatively unknown. This waterfall is not just a beautiful hiking trail but also the perfect spot for wild swimming.
The waterfall itself is made up of 3 different mini waterfalls which are quite small in size but just stunning. As you approach, you’ll be greeted by the beautiful sound of water crashing down the rocks and the sight of an incredible waterfall hidden away in the surrounding forest.
Where to Find Coolalingo Waterfall…
Coolalingo Waterfall is located in the Glenmalure Valley, a small and scenic area in County Wicklow. The valley is part of the Wicklow Mountains, which are known for their diverse landscapes of forest and mountains. The waterfall itself is somewhat hidden and can be a bit tricky to find if you don’t know where to look.
To reach Coolalingo Waterfall, you’ll first need to get to Glenmalure, which is about an hour and a half drive from Dublin. The drive itself brings you past some of the most scenic parts of Wicklow and will treat you to views over the Wicklow mountains and Irish sea. Once you arrive in Glenmalure, you’ll want to park at the Glenmalure Forest car park.
There are 2 ways to reach the waterfall which are both quite moderate, with some steep sections. You’ll be walking through some beautiful forest trails and along the Coolalingo river before reaching the incredible waterfall itself. While you’re here I would definitely recommend trying out the Glenmalure Forest trail as well as the trail is incredible!
Exact Detailed Directions…
Getting to Coolalingo Waterfall involves a bit of adventure, but it’s well worth the effort. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to find this hidden gem:
Parking at Glenmalure Forest Car Park
Park your car at the Glenmalure Forest Car Park. The car park itself is very small and can only fit around max 5 cars so I would advise coming early if you’re looking for a spot close to the waterfall itself. If the car park is full no worries there is the Glenmalure lodge just a few minutes down the road which you can also park at and then hike up the road to the Forest entrance.
The Hike to Coolalingo Waterfall
From the Glenmalure Forest Car Park there are 2 ways you can reach the waterfall, the easiest is to follow the road itself over the bridge. You will follow the road about 150m till you see a small gap in the wall. The trail can be steep in places, so be sure to wear sturdy hiking boots and bring plenty of water.
Arriving at Coolalingo Waterfall
Follow the river up stream and you will spot the waterfall about 1 minute into the walk and then from there it is less than a minute walk.
Things to do know…
While wild swimming is a fun, it’s important to take some safety precautions, especially when swimming in a natural setting like Coolalingo Waterfall. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
Check the Weather: Before you head out, check the weather forecast. Rain can cause the water levels to rise quickly, making the conditions dangerous for swimming.
Know Your Limits: The water at Coolalingo can be cold, so take it slow when getting in. If you’re not a strong swimmer, stay close to the edge where the water is shallow.
Swim with a Buddy: It’s always safer to swim with a friend, especially in remote locations like Coolalingo.
Be Aware of the Current: The waterfall creates a gentle current in the pool, so be aware of your surroundings and avoid getting too close to the falls if you’re not confident in your swimming abilities.
Leave No Trace: Be sure to pack out all your rubbish and leave the area as you found it, so that others can enjoy it too.
