Reciting Surah al-Fatiha and another Surah is an essential part of every prayer, and it’s crucial to ensure that we are pronouncing the words correctly. We’ll go through the key rules of Tajweed in prayer, highlighting both obligatory and recommended practices, and provide examples to make sure your recitation is correct.
📚 What You’ll Learn:
Obligatory Tajweed Rules:
Pronouncing all letters correctly from their makhraj (place of articulation), like saying ضَّآلِّينَ correctly as daaleen.
Pronouncing all vowels and sukoons as they are written. For example, ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ should be pronounced as alhamdu lillah, not alhamdi.
Skipping Hamzatul Wasl when connecting certain words, such as reading رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ as rabbil ‘alameen, not rabbi al ‘alameen.
Pronouncing Hamzatul Qat’ in all circumstances, like ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ should be read as alladhina an’amta, not alladhinan ‘amta.
Applying Idgham when the laam in alif laam is followed by a sun letter, e.g. ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ as ar rahman, not al rahman.
Reading the laam in alif laam when followed by a moon letter, such as in رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ as rabbil ‘alameen.
Pronouncing Madd correctly when followed by a shaddah to distinguish each letter, like in وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ as wal daalleen.
Recommended Tajweed Rules:
Idgham when it comes to the rules of yarmalun, e.g. وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدُۢ can be read as wa lam ya kun lahu, but it’s recommended to say wa lam ya kullahuu.
Noon Qutni rule in verses like ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ, where qul huwallahu ahadun illahu samad would follow the correct Kasra on the noon.
Waqf rules are recommended when pausing between words, such as reading قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ as qul huwallahu ahad, with the last vowel changed to sukoon for clarity.
