What's the reason for it? Sometimes the reason is that the horse just doesn't like it!
Whether it be a broom a horse is scared of or 'strange things' on the nearside, often what the recipe is for getting a horse used to almost anything is a combination of time, patience and building the horse's own confidence.
It's not always easy understand, but by being understandING, we can help horses build their confidence around things they are unsure of to begin with.
You may notice the near-miss at the start of this video - they do happen! None of us want to get into. an accident or a near miss, but how we deal with them when we do is the most important part, which is why Barry asks Harry to continue on as though nothing had happened. As Barry says, 'there is no point screaming and shouting and smacking him and telling him not to be so silly!'
