Jack Doyle is surely one of the most notorious and controversial characters to hail from the Cork Harbour town of Cobh. Born in 1913 into humble circumstances he had a failed attempt at the British Heavy Weight Boxing title at the age of 19. From there he left to find his fortune in the USA where he became the toast of the Hollywood set, though unsuccessful. A natural entertainer, bon-vivant and singing star, Doyle was one of the most popular people in 1930’s Ireland, possibly our first true celebrity sex symbol.
