#globalcitizens #globalcitizenship #multiculturaleducation #transformativecitizenship Emeritus Professor James Banks—the father of multicultural education—discusses with Emiliano Bosio the citizenship-education dilemma, learning for democratic values, transformative classrooms, and failed citizenship. Professor Banks is the Kerry and Linda Killinger Endowed Chair in Diversity Studies Emeritus at the University of Washington, Seattle. He was the founding director of the Center for Multicultural Education from 1992 to 2018, which was later renamed the Banks Center for Educational Justice. He received the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Social Justice in Education Award in 2004 and the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association for Multicultural Education. Professor Banks is a past president of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and the American Educational Research Association (AERA). He is also a Fellow of AERA and an elected member of both the National Academy of Education and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In this video, we discuss multicultural education, transformative citizenship, and global citizenship, as well as key themes of Professor Banks’ research, including the citizenship-education dilemma, learning for democratic values, transformative classrooms, and failed citizenship. “To Know, To Care, and To Act” are the three distinctive characteristics of multicultural and citizenship education, according to Professor James Banks. ============================= To cite this video-interview: Bosio, E.
