Hot on the heels of a reunion tour with drummer Mike Portnoy, celebrating the band’s 40th anniversary, Dream Theater's new record, Parasomnia, was released on February 7th and was met with critical and fan acclaim. The band continues the anniversary tour, now with dates in North America, and songs from the new album are elbowing their way onto the setlist. On the first dates, “Midnight Messiah” had its live debut, accompanying “Night Terror”, the first single, which had already been played last year. Whether or not more songs from Parasomnia will be added to the set, remains to be seen. Whatever the case, the current tour is not to be missed. Fans can expect a dynamic mix of classic and new material, showcasing Dream Theater's signature blend of technical mastery and musical storytelling. The return of the classical lineup of the forefathers of prog metal of course attracted eyes and ears in the metal world. All members, including “The Silent Man” John Myung have been prominently featured in the press, and have done countless interviews to promote the new album and tour. Sonic Perspectives collaborator Rodrigo Altaf was lucky to have a few minutes to talk to the band’s singer James LaBrie, and together, they discussed the intricacies of putting together the current setlist, the band’s current dynamics, and sense of cohesion after the return of Portnoy, how the shows have been embraced by the fans to the point of moshpits forming during the last encore with "Pull Me Under", the record profound and thought-provoking lyrical themes, some plans for the immediate future, and more.
