James O’Brien unpacks John Bolton’s blunt critique of Donald Trump
In a piece for The Telegraph, former U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton paints a damning picture of Donald Trump, describing the former president as a leader with “no strategy, no philosophy, and no objectives.”
Bolton writes that Trump is the ultimate transactional figure, driven entirely by self-interest. This, he argues, makes it nearly impossible to predict his actions. While media, politicians, and business leaders often assume Trump is bluffing or posturing, they are repeatedly caught off guard, citing examples like Ukraine, NATO, and trade tariffs.
James reflects on Bolton’s assessment, noting that those who backed Trump “got it wrong.”
He suggests Trump should’ve dismissed his own tariff policy as an “April Fools’ joke,” and urges people to stop trying to make sense of his decisions.
In James' view, the former president can be summed up in just three words: 'petty, simplistic, and vindictive.'
